Porto Flavia is an amazing engineering complex located in the commune of Iglesias, on the west coast of the island of Sardinia. The site is a port built right into the rock and is part of a historic mining district. Built in 1924, Porto Flavia allowed a much easier transportation of ore, making it an important industrial site of the time. The main feature of the port is the tunnel system leading to a platform overhanging the sea, from which the raw materials were loaded onto ships. This engineering solution significantly reduced the time and cost of logistics, replacing the complex and time-consuming transportation of raw materials to the nearest ports. Today, Porto Flavia is not only a monument of industrial heritage, but also a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can see the grandiose galleries, enjoy the view of the turquoise sea and the famous rock Pan di Zucchero, towering above the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Tours of the complex allow you to learn about the history of mining in Sardinia and appreciate the bold engineering solutions of the early 20th century.
