The Diakopto - Kalavrita cog railroad gets its name from the cogs that trains use to climb steep slopes. The train is designed in such a way that the cogs are perfectly aligned with the points of the line, providing reliable traction both uphill and downhill. The 22 km long track runs through a variety of sections where the train travels at 30-40 km/h on conventional track and slows down to 6-15 km/h on cogged tracks. The train climbs up steep slopes revealing stunning panoramic views where every turn reveals new mountain peaks, deep valleys and verdant expanses. The road passes through a mesmerizing river gorge with cascading waterfalls and the charming village of Zahloru. The trip lasts about an hour and includes a stop at an impressive cave with mesmerizing stalactites, reminiscent of a courtroom, it is this resemblance that gave the cave the name “Dikastiria” The route ends in the picturesque mountain town of Kalavrita, which is not only stunning in its natural beauty but also preserves a significant historical heritage, making it an important tourist destination. Kalavrita is also known for its ski resort, which is one of the largest and most popular in Greece.
