Meteora is a complex of monasteries located on cliff tops in central Greece, near the town of Kalambaka. The name Meteora comes from the Greek word “Μετέωρα”, which means “floating in the air”. The monasteries are built on top of high and steep cliffs, giving the impression that they are actually “hanging” in the air. The History and Architecture of Meteora dates back to the 11th century, when the first hermits began to settle in the caves of the cliffs. The main monasteries were built in the XIV-XVI centuries. The monastic community was most developed in the late XIV and early XV centuries. A total of 24 monasteries were originally built here, but only 6 active monasteries have survived until our time:
1) TheGreat Meteora Monastery - is the largest and most visited of all the monasteries.
2) Monasteryof Barlaam- the second largest monastery, named after its founder, the monk Barlaam.
3) St. Stephen's Monastery - is one of the most easily accessible monasteries for women, as there is a bridge leading to it.
4) Monasteryof St. Nicholas of Anapavsas - is a small monastery known for its picturesque paintings.
5) Monastery of Holy Trinity - is located on a separate rock and can be reached on foot by steep steps.
6) Rusanu Monastery - a picturesque nunnery with unique frescoes and beautiful views.
