Tourlitis Lighthouse is located on the island of Andros, opposite the Venetian castle and has been standing on a rock illuminating the sea for over 120 years. The picturesque and impressive Turlitis lighthouse was built in 1887 and was first operational on January 1, 1897. The lighthouse has a height of 7 meters, a focal height of 36 meters and is a class 5 mirror with a brightness of 11 nautical miles. It is the first automatic lighthouse in Greece with technology that gives it greater reliability, as it does not require constant observation. During the Second World War, in September 1943, the lighthouse was destroyed in a bombardment by the Germans. In 1950, after the reconstruction of lighthouse networks in Greece, it began to function as an automatic generator on the ruins of the old one. In 1994, the lighthouse was restored to its original form, thanks to a donation from the goulandris family. Since then, it has been functioning again as an automatic generator. Turlitis lighthouse is one of the most impressive lighthouses in Greece, which has become a postage stamp as part of Hellenic Post's “Lighthouses of Greece” stamp series.
