Famous Pottery Village

Oposhnya is located on the right bank of the Vorskla River. According to legend, in ancient times the coast of the ocean stretched here. Thanks to this natural phenomenon, the area is rich in clay deposits, ideal for the creation of ceramic products. The name is believed to be related to the term “opoka”, a sedimentary microporous rock composed of amorphous silica with clay substances, skeletal remains of organisms (diatoms, radiolarians and spicules of siliceous sponges) and mineral grains (quartz, feldspar, glauconite). In the eighteenth century, weaving and pottery began to develop in the region. By the end of the 19th century, it had gained fame as a center of Ukrainian folk art, becoming famous for its ceramics (dishes, toys, facing tiles with large stylized plant patterns) and fabric products, including embroidered shirts and tablecloths. It was this breed that became the basis for the development of pottery in Oposhna, which brought fame and glory to the village.
