HMHS Britannic

Britannicus was a British ocean liner built in the early 20th century by Harland and Wolff in Belfast. The ship was the third and last ship of the Olympic class, which also included the famous Titanic and Olympic. The Britannic was originally intended for passenger transportation as part of the White Star Line. However, due to the outbreak of World War I, it was converted into a hospital ship, being named His Majesty's Hospital Ship Britannic. Launched in 1914, Britannic never had time to begin regular voyages as a liner. In November 1916, she sank in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Kea Island in Greece, presumably by a mine explosion. Despite extensive damage, most of the passengers on board were saved thanks to improved safety measures taken into account after the Titanic liner disaster. Today the Britannic lies on the seabed at 37°42′05″N, 24°17′02″E. 24°17′02″E at a depth of 122 meters and attract the attention of historians and underwater explorers. This depth is accessible to experienced divers, but the ship's status as a military mass grave requires special permission for such underwater expeditions from the British and Greek governments.
