The cave is considered one of the most impressive sights on the island of Kitnos. It is one of the largest and most interesting caves in Greece, where unique dripstone formations blend harmoniously with natural and man-made elements. The cave got its name because for centuries it served as a refuge for the inhabitants of Kitnos during various attacks, from pirate raids to Turkish and German occupations. Kataiki Cave is located in the central part of the island, south of the village of Dryopis, in the Fires area. This vast underground space is located at an altitude of about 190 meters above sea level and consists of a large natural cave, supplemented by a system of artificial mine galleries. The cave was originally formed by an underground water flow and was later used as a mine.
