The Evzon uniform has a long history and importance to the Greeks. It is related to the national liberation struggle of 1821, as it was the uniform of the military leaders and fighters who led the revolution against the Ottoman Empire. The uniform is an element of Greek national identity. It has been an official national symbol since the establishment of the Greek state and has been associated with the heroic image of the Greeks ever since. The uniforms of the officers of the Presidential Guard are slightly different from those of the Goplites (Eusonian soldiers), but the main characteristics of the two uniforms remain common. All parts of the uniform are handmade, which requires considerable time and technical skill.
Fario - the headdress with the metal national emblem pinned in the center, is made of red felt, which symbolizes the sacrifices and blood shed by the fighters in the liberating national struggle. The black thisanos, the silk strands on the headdress, symbolizes the tears and sorrow of the Greeks during the dark years of slavery.
Fermeli - the vest is a complex part of the uniform, its production requires a lot of effort and time. It is embroidered from white and gilded threads, based on the rich traditions of folk folklore.
Zoni - belt states that the fighter is well-armed.
Krossia - the blue and white silk on the uniform of the Evzons symbolizes the colors of the Greek flag.
Fustanela - the dress is made of 30 meters of white cloth consisting of 400 folds, one for each year of slavery. Its white color, like the white of the shirt, is a symbol of the struggle for independence.
Kaltsodetes- black colored garters below the knees made of silk.
Kaltses- Evzon double-layered tights, white in color made of wool, which are supported at the waist, below the fustanella, by an inner waistband and four leather straps.
Tsaruhi - the shoes are entirely handmade and made of leather. Each shoe weighs about 2 kilograms, as the sole is reinforced with 60 nails and a horseshoe on the heel. On the toe are black pom-poms, which, according to tradition, served to camouflage knife blades, for hand-to-hand combat.
Fario - is a headdress made of red felt and black silk. The red and black colors symbolize the blood spilled by the Greeks on the altar of freedom and mourning for their victims. The tight knot on the tirsano symbolizes the unity of the Greeks against enemy threats.
Ipoditis - is a shirt made of white cotton fabric, with a large collar and double sleeves. The inner part fits around Evzon's arms, while the outer part is wide, with a large opening at the wrists.
Fermeli - is a vest decorated with hand embroidery done in a rare and exquisite technique. Its patterns and variations go back to folk tradition and have a great symbolic meaning. It is made of purple velvet and gold thread and is similar to the vest of Kolokotronis.
Fustanela - the officer's dress is similar to the soldier's, except that it is longer and corresponds to the dress of the chiefs of 1821.
Zoni - the ammunition belt is made of leather and serves to support the fustanella and to it is attached a metal cartridge case, on which is depicted St. George, the patron saint of the land army.
Spafa - a metal replica of the 1821 Chiefs' sword with a wooden hilt decorated with two fringe tassels of purple and gold colors.
Periskelida - long red linen pants worn under a skirt.
Kaltsodetes - blue in color, made of silk.
Tuzlukia - (Pericnipes) cover the top of the shoes and reach the knees, they are made of velvet and decorated with gold embroidery. They were originally worn by thieves, charioteers and legendary freedom fighters, and then, around the middle of the 19th century, King Otto introduced them as part of the court dress.
Stivalya - red leather half-boots designed for senior and junior officers, made in the style of the traditional footwear of chiefs.
The Presidential Guard is a custodian of history and cultural heritage, carefully preserving in its archive the traditional national costumes of the different regions of Greece. Among them are the Pontic uniform, the Aegean mountain uniform and the Thracian uniform. The Evzones wear these uniforms on special, memorable days, emphasizing the importance of the country's cultural traditions.
