Ancient Corinth

Ancient Corinth was rightly considered one of the most powerful and wealthy cities of ancient Greece. Its strategic location on the narrow Isthmus of Corinth made this region a key crossroads of sea and land routes. The city became a key trading hub of the ancient world, famous for its two bustling ports, Lechaion and Cenchreae, which provided trade links with the East and West. Handicrafts flourished here, with exquisite ceramics, refined bronze items, and luxury goods being produced that were highly prized far beyond the borders of Hellas. It was Corinthian architects who gave the world the Corinthian order, the most elegant and decorative style of antiquity, adorned with lush capitals with acanthus leaves. The ruins of the impregnable Acrocorinth, one of the most powerful acropolises in Greece, tower over the city. Despite the destruction of Corinth by the Romans in 146 BC, the city was reborn as a Roman colony and once again became an important center of the Mediterranean. In the following centuries, it played a significant role in the history of early Christianity, being closely associated with the preaching activities of the Apostle Paul.
