Эрехтейон – пожалуй один из самых запоминающихся храмов Акрополя. Этот памятник древнегреческой архитектуры построен в 421-406 годах до нашей эры и посвящен главным греческим божествам: Афине и Посейдону, а также афинскому царю Эрехтею. Эрехтейон многие путают с храмом Гекатомпедоном, так как развалины Гекатомпедона лежат перед храмом Эрехтеона и если не читать табличек то можно пройти мимо и даже не заподозрить что рядом лежат развалины некогда могучего древнейший храма Афинского акрополя и предшественник Парфенона. По преданию храм построен на месте спора между Афиной и Посейдоном за власть над Аттикой. Эрехтейон построен на месте более древнего храма, который был разрушен во время Греко-Персидской войны. Строительство инициировал Перикл, но завершено оно было уже после его смерти.
Эрехтейон не имеет аналогов в древнегреческой архитектуре, выполненный в ионическом стиле и имеет ассиметричную планировку и многообразия святилищ соединенных в нем. Храм имел два главных входа с севера и востока, котрые были оформлены ионическими портиками. Восточная часть Эрехтейона была посвящена богине Афине, а западная - Посейдону и царю Эрехтею. С южной стороны находится знаменитый портик Пандросейон, названый именем дочери царя Кекропа Пандросы.
Архитрав подпирают шесть мраморных статуй девушек (кариатид) это главная достопримечательность Эрехтейона. Сегодня все они заменены на копии, оригиналы же находятся в музее Акрополя. В древности в храме бил солёный источник, который по легенде Посейдон высек из скалы своим трезубцем, а в открытом дворике росло оливковое дерево, подаренное Афиной. Своё название храм получил в честь Афинского царя Эрехтея. Его могила находилась под северным портиком. А у западного фасада храма можно и сегодня увидеть могилу первого царя Аттики Кекропа.
О внутреннем убранстве храма достоверно почти ничего неизвестно, но можно предположить, что оно впечатляло своим величием. Большие изменения храм претерпел в 7 веке, когда его переделали в христианскую церковь. Во времена Османской империи храм использовался как гарем турецкого султана. Первая серьезная реставрация храма была проведена после получения Грецией независимости. Сегодня Эрехтейон включен в список Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО в составе Афинского Акрополя.
